What Do We Do?
Funding provided to AlaCop, Inc. through SupportPoliceOfficers.com allows us to provide the following resources to law enforcement officers and their families:
(1) AlaCop.us has been in operation since 1997 and has served more than 1,000 law enforcement officers from hundreds of agencies throughout Alabama, other states, and other countries. AlaCop.us is basically a police officer locker room where officers can post and receive messages through their personal email accounts. Most law enforcement communications are conducted through formal channels and chains of command. This allows active, retired, and reserve officers; along with important support personnel; to have direct contact with each other, no matter which agency they work for or which area they work. This allows for the communication of information, support, broadcasts of investigative information, training notices, and relationships to be developed among officers who might otherwise never meet. An average of 300 messages are communicated each month among the officers associated with AlaCop.us.
As part of the service provided by AlaCop.us, we provide free AlaCop.us email accounts to police officers for their personal email communications. We provide valuable information to the public concerning criminal and safety alerts on the AlaCop.us website. There is a private secure area for police officers where bulletins and information is made available for their review. Last, but not least, we provide tributes to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice on the AlaCop.us website.
(2) Today's Law Enforcement Officers are challenged with legal, moral, ethical, social, and procedural decisions every day. Many states and agencies now require continued education for police officers to remain certified for employment. While agencies will often provide the minimum required training, most police officers are highly dedicated and seek additional training and education on their own time at their own expense. With limitations for additional incomes and low to moderate pay scales, this is difficult for police officers to afford. Communities benefit from highly trained and educated law enforcement officers. Not only do they benefit from better, more professional service; but they also see advantages to their insurance rates when crime statistics are low for their area. To help officers who wish to increase their levels of training and education, AlaCop, Inc. makes use of funding through SupportPoliceOfficers.com to offer scholarships for basic and advanced training courses to officers who need help paying registration fees and travel expenses for expanded training. Also available are scholarships for college level criminal justice courses and assistance with student loan payments for officers who have taken on additional debt to complete college level criminal justice programs. This not only helps the officers, but the residents and businesses who depend upon them for high quality service and protection.
(3) To make sure that officers are safe and have the tools necessary to do their jobs well, AlaCop, Inc. makes use of funding through SupportPoliceOfficers.com to provide equipment items to law enforcement officers who are not provided with needed equipment by their agencies and who can not afford quality equipment on their own. This ranges from backup flashlights to audio/video recording systems to bullet resistant vests. Many agencies still require police officers to provide their own equipment. Unfortunately, these are usually the agencies that can not afford to pay reasonable salaries to their officers either. We work to keep officers safe and help them to perform their jobs better and to serve their communities well in their daily duties. A well equipped officer is just as important and a well trained officer. Officers, communities, and the families of officers benefit from this service when those officers are equipped to perform their duties safely and efficiently, and return home healthy at the end of each shift.
(4) Officers are Injured and Killed in the Line of Duty on a daily basis. We have developed a program to help support officers and their families when tragedy strikes. While we can only help when financial support allows, we intend to send support to all officers and families who suffer severe injury or death of a Hero.
It is our hope to continue to develop these programs and to see them grow extensively. As we are able to provide more resources to law enforcement officers, you will see our success on our web site as we report to you what you have helped us to achieve. Thank You for your support!
